Big-rig crash victims remembered

QUARTZ HILL, Calif. Posca, 58, and his 12-year-old daughter, both of Palmdale, were killed when a runaway truck crashed into their car in La Canada-Flintridge last week.

Posca's car was hit by a big-rig that lost its brakes coming down the /*Angeles Crest Highway*/. Investigators say the driver of the rig, /*Marcos Costa*/, ignored posted weight restrictions that barred the truck from Angeles Crest Highway. He has been charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

This was not the first major crash in the area, and many local residents and officials angrily blamed /*Caltrans*/ for failing to address the problem of runaway trucks coming down the mountain road and into residential and business districts.

In the wake of the crash, a 90-day ban on all five-axle trucks on Angeles Crest between the 210 freeway and Angeles Forest Highway was put in place. California Assemblyman Anthony Portantino has introduced legislation to make the ban permanent.

Earlier this week, /*Angel Posca*/'s niece, Nicole, issued a statement in support of the truck ban: "Is this what it takes to finally take proper action for safety on this highway? Two ill-fated deaths and a plethora of mourning family and friends? Although the driver of the runaway truck is currently facing charges, I believe Caltrans bureaucrats need to take deeper actions to remedy this situation."
