Volunteers wash feet of L.A. homeless

LOS ANGELES Celebrities and political leaders were among the hundreds of volunteers washing feet, serving meals and giving the homeless new shoes and Easter baskets.

The event is a tradition at the Los Angeles Mission in downtown Los Angeles.

The washing of the feet of the needy recalls the biblical story of Jesus Christ washing the feet of his disciples the night before he was crucified.

The mission served 3,000 meals and shut down an entire block of Fifth Street between Wall and San Pedro for the event.

Volunteers distributed 2,000 pairs of new shoes from /*etnies*/ footwear and clothing, as well as Easter baskets stuffed with toys provided by /*JAKKS Pacific, Inc.*/

The Mission said with the downturn in the economy, there's been a greater demand for their services.
