Discouraging health news for L.A. County

LOS ANGELES, Calif. According to the report, L.A. County ranked among the worst in deaths caused by /*heart disease*/ and /*diabetes*/. Health officials say the poor rankings are a continued sign that obesity related deaths are a major problem in L.A. County.

L.A. County also lagged in breast feeding rates. Another big problem is sexually transmitted diseases.

In violent deaths, the county has one of the worst /*homicide rates*/ in the state.

On a positive note, the public health report places L.A. County among the healthiest in lung cancer and injury rates.

Among the state's 58 counties, L.A. ranked sixth for low rates of injury-related deaths, seventh in making sure mothers receive adequate prenatal care, and eighth for low rates of death from lung cancer.

The report was released by the /*California Department of Public Health*/ and the Conference of Local Health Officers.
