"In 14 years, I have never seen anything like this, " said San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Grantham.
The accident investigation shut down Outer Highway 18 between Flathead and Jicarilla roads for several hours.
Butler was traveling west on Highway 18 sometime between midnight and 5 a.m., when he lost control near Jicarilla Road.
The minivan went off the highway onto Outer Highway 18, where it traveled at least 700 feet into the driveway of a vacant house. It flipped and went through the fence of the house next door.
Butler was ejected and landed on the roof of the neighboring home.
Butler lived nearby, but investigators do not know if he was on his way home at the time of the accident.
Officials are trying to locate witnesses to the crash.
