Boyfriend in Covina murder surrenders

COVINA, Calif. Police said Yazmeen Hassan had significant trauma to her head and was pronounced dead at a home on 136 S. Brightview Drive on Monday at 2:27 p.m.

They were searching for her boyfriend, 18-year-old Joseph Gutierrez, as a person of interest. He was booked on suspicion of murdering Hassan Tuesday.

Investigators say Hassan had recently moved into the home belonging to her boyfriend's grandparents and was sharing a room with him. Detectives said the grandparents were home in another room at the time when they heard a gunshot.

"The grandfather was notified of the discovery, heard the shot and learned that the victim was injured and in the bedroom," said Sgt. Dave Foster, Covina Police Department.

Police said Gutierrez was home at the time of the shooting, but left before police arrived.

Anyone with information is urged to call (626) 858-4413.
