Other studies have documented potential health benefits of light alcohol consumption. The Dutch scientists say their work is significant because their research started in 1960 and followed subjects over a period of 40 years.
The researchers couldn't say if their findings apply to women, but they suspect the compounds found in wine, especially red wine, would have similar health effects.
The study is published online in the April issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
