Riverside posts new RR warning signs

May 13, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
The city of Riverside has begun posting warnings signs at two dozen railroad crossings that are deemed especially dangerous.City officials hope the signs can help prevent another tragedy like the one that claimed the life of an Arlington High School student last month.

Samuel Sung-Jae Shin, 14, was struck and killed by a Metrolink train last month. Shin had stopped to let a westbound train pass, but then tried to cross the tracks and was hit by a train coming the other direction.

The Jackson Street crossing where Shin died was the first to get one of the 36-inch wide signs, which read: "Look both ways, trains may approach from different directions."
