Teen driver charged with friends' deaths

FULLERTON, Calif. Nineteen-year-old Jared Berggren was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter.

Jacquelyn Ardalan, 19, of La Habra and Miles Christensen, 19, of Fullerton were killed May 11 when they were ejected from the Toyota Berggren was driving.

Prosecutors say Berggren was driving under the influence and speeding in a Fullerton neighborhood, when he crashed the pickup truck into a tree.

Berggren was taken to UCI Medical Center, with head injuries.

Investigators say the teens were drinking in a cul-de-sac on Coyote Hills Drive early Monday morning. The accident happened about 2:30 a.m. as the blue pickup truck traveled eastbound on Coyote Hills Drive and the driver lost control.

Fullerton police say the truck went off the road, up an embankment and hit a large tree, which tore off the top of the truck.

Investigators later found beer bottles at the cul-de-sac down the street.
