Donation restarts shelter construction

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Construction on the 15,000-square-foot facility in San Bernardino stalled recently as donations dried up because of the economy.

But the donation from San Manuel allows the project to get back on track, and should be completed within 120 days, according to Fr. Mike Barry, president of Mary's Mercy Center.

Barry says the center has been hit twice, once by the economy, and then by increased demands for its services as people lose their jobs and homes.

Veronica's Home of Mercy I already provides 40 beds, as well as education and counseling, to help families get back on their feet.

Veronica's home opened in 1995 with the goal of helping women and children who are temporarily homeless.
