Security heightened at Vandenberg AFB

June 4, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Increased security is in effect Thursday at Southern California's Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc.Ordered by the U.S. Defense Department, the beefed-up security has closed off public access to the state's Point Sal Beach, just west of Vandenberg.

The 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg says the heightened state of security will remain in place indefinitely.

No details on why the security has been increased at this time. However, the measures were imposed after Osama bin Laden released an audio recording threatening Americans.

As part of security procedures, outdoor recreational activity has also been banned on most parts of Vandenberg's 98,000 acres.

City News Service and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
