2 dead, 1 injured at rest stop shooting

VICTORVILLE, Calif. Two men were found shot to death in a truck in Victorville on Tuesday, and a third man is seriously injured.

The injured man was able to stagger away from the truck and out to the highway where he was spotted.

Motorists called 911 about a man in the roadway in trouble on Eucalyptus Street at about 10:30 p.m.

"And I see this guy asking for help, you know, he was, he got blood all over his shirt and he was miserable, you know. So I stopped to help him and I see a big-old wound on his eye right here and the chest, so I called 911," said one witness. "Hopefully he's going to be OK."

Police found the man and rushed him to a local hospital. He underwent surgery and remains in very serious condition.

"The individual was able to communicate to the deputies that he was, in fact, with additional individuals, and they were believed to be nearby," Sgt. Doug Hubbard from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Police launched a search for the other men and for the suspects, locating a black pickup truck with the other victims.

Hubbard said the shooting occurred in a proposed housing development near Highway 395 between 10 and 10:30 p.m.

The names of the victims have not been released, and no one has been arrested.

"Our first step is to of course identify the victims and try to establish what brought them to the high desert to begin with," Hubbard said. "We believe that they're out of the Los Angeles area, but we haven't been able to confirm that."

The desert area around the shooting site was searched for hours for evidence pointing to who is responsible. Highway 395 was closed for several hours, but was reopened at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.
