LAPD names first Islamic chaplain

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. Sheik Gazi Asad will serve as a volunteer reserve chaplain at the North Hollywood station.

The department tells the L.A. Times that it hopes Asad's presence will help build ties between police and the local Islamic community.

Asad has served as a religious advisor since arriving in the U.S. more than 20 years ago.

He started working with local law enforcement after the September 11 attacks in 2001.
