Local cities cancel fireworks displays

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. Lake Elsinore eliminated its city-sponsored /*fireworks*/. But Lake Elsinore City Councilman Thomas Buckley said he still holds out hope that someone will step forward to pay for the pyrotechnic display.

"I'm not completely done yet, so we'll see what we can find," said Buckley. "I think the chances are pretty slim, considering the time constraints."

The city of Lake Elsinore is facing a $3.1 million deficit. A fireworks show would cost roughly $15,000.

Banning has also canceled its fireworks show this year, and Moreno Valley is spending roughly half as much as it did last year for its display.

Other cities in the area will continue with their fireworks displays including Murrietta, Wildomar and Temecula.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has set up a hotline for you to get information on professional fireworks displays. Call (888) 654-FIRE for more information.
