Holiday traffic deaths down in California

LOS ANGELES According to the California Highway Patrol, traffic crashes claimed 24 lives statewide from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, compared with 41 road fatalities during the same period in 2008.

In Los Angeles County, four people died in holiday traffic accidents, compared to 12 deaths during the same period a year ago.

Statewide, more than 1,200 motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, 400 fewer than the July 4th weekend in 2008.

CHP officers in Los Angeles County made 213 DUI arrests during the holiday period, compared with 321 such arrests in 2008.

The Highway Patrol and local police agencies were out in force all weekend.
