West L.A. power outage snarls traffic

A West Los Angeles power outage was caused by a blown transformer Wednesday night.A transformer reportedly blew up at a Department of Water and Power (LADWP) location at approximately 7:47 p.m. The LADWP reported at 9:55 p.m. that power was fully restored.

Approximately 20,500 customers were affected. The LADWP said the problem was at an electric distribution station.

There were 13 reports of people trapped in elevators. Traffic lights throughout the area were out, causing major traffic jams.

The approximate area of the outage roughly comprised Olympic to the south, Wilshire on the north, Barrington on the west and Overland to the east.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a tactical alert shortly after 9 p.m.
