Local teen competing for big honor

EAST LOS ANGELES /*Madeleine Salazar*/, 17, has already been named California Youth of the Year. The award recognizes exceptional young people who have overcome great hardships.

The Roosevelt High School graduate is heading to MIT in the fall, and has devoted much of her time to helping kids at the Salesian /*Boys and Girls Club*/.

She's competing with other state winners for the regional honor, a college scholarship, and a trip to Washington, D.C., for the national finals.
