Thieves target cemetery mourners

WHITTIER, Calif. Purses, laptops and other valuables have been taken from unlocked cars at the /*Rose Hills Memorial Park*/ in Whittier. There have been 26 thefts from cars so far this year. Last year, there were 11 total thefts.

Authorities are warning people who visit Rose Hills to lock their cars and leave valuables at home.

Sheriff's deputies are now patrolling the cemetery and posting fliers warning of the thefts.

Rose Hills representative Richard Hardy told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin the 1,400 acre hillside cemetery is in the sprawling Los Angeles urban area and "whatever happens outside, happens inside a cemetery."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
