Massive fuselage towed down SoCal streets

SEAL BEACH, Calif. The /*C-17 fuselage*/ was trucked from Boeing's Long Beach facility to the Seal Beach Naval Station, all 170-feet of the wingless body.

It was a delicate maneuver, with utility crews pushing overhanging power lines out of its path. The operation began late Tuesday night and extended into the predawn hours Wednesday.

The aircraft will be transferred to a ship en route to the east coast, via the Panama Canal.

The Orange County Register reports the structure will end up at a military base in Ft. Lee, Va., where it will serve as a static training vehicle for armed forces members learning to load and offload C-17s and cargo aircraft widely used by the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan
