Medical marijuana debate heats up in L.B.

LONG BEACH, Calif. Long Beach Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga plans to ask the council to support a move to develop guidelines to regulate /*medical marijuana*/ clubs or dispensaries.

She says Long Beach does not have its own standards for the dispensaries, so no one really knows how many exist in the city. She wants the city to keep tabs on how many are in operation and where they are located.

Her move comes as a new medical marijuana pharmacy is set to open in Long Beach on Saturday, August 8.

The operators of Cornerstone Health and Wellness are sponsoring a medical marijuana giveaway to mark their grand opening. They plan to give away a free gram of top grade medical marijuana to each of the first 100 patients who arrive at the facility on West Willow Street.

There is no purchase necessary to receive the free pot, but patients must have their original doctor's recommendation along with their state-issued photo ID.
