The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said two deputies confronted 30-year-old Ezekiel Tito Jacobo and got into a struggle over a gun. The suspect was killed during the struggle.
Authorities said Jacobo was a parolee at large.
However, witnesses said Jacobo never went after a deputy's gun before being shot. They said deputies were questioning a group of men when Jacobo attempted to run away but fell down and was shot in the back.
"As soon as he ran out, he didn't make it more than 20 feet, he slipped and he fell," said Antonia Toledo. "The cop sort of passed him up and came back and pulled out his gun and just shot him six or seven times."
Friends said Jacobo is survived by his 4-year-old daughter.
Sheriff's deputies said an investigation is ongoing.
