Gunfire at senior assisted living center

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, Calif. Police received a call of someone shooting out of a window of the /*assisted living facility*/ at 108th Street and Avalon Boulevard just after 11:30 a.m.

When police arrived they found a woman outside with a gunshot wound. They went into the building and confronted the gunman, who was in a wheelchair.

"The officers observed a man in a nearby window shooting multiple rounds out of the window. They believed that they had an active shooter at the scene and they formed what's called an entry team," said Det. Gus Villanueva from the LAPD. "They went into the location. Once they entered they encountered a man with a gun. An officer involved shooting ensued and the man, the gunman who was in a wheelchair, was struck by gunfire."

The shooter was taken into custody and police seized the gun he was using.

Both the victim and the gunman were transported to the hospital for treatment, but their conditions are not known.

No police were injured in the shooting.

Police have not released the names of the suspect or the victim. They have not said what relationship, if any, the victim and the suspect might have shared.

The officer involved shooting is under investigation.
