O.C. cop charged with assaulting wife

SANTA ANA, Calif. Thirty-three-year-old James Roberts III is being held on $250,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Police say between June 2007 and May 2008, Roberts physically and verbally abused his wife. They say on one occasion, he pushed her to the ground in the bathroom, causing her to hit the bathtub and toilet. Roberts is also accused of threatening to kill her if she reported the assault to police.

The Orange County District Attorney's office says Roberts began a relationship with another woman in 2007, while he was still married. Prosecutors say between March and July of that year, he held his girlfriend against her will. He's also accused of assaulting her in May 2008.

Roberts is charged with eight felony counts and if convicted on all charges, he could face 14 years in prison.
