Thousands race across San Pedro Bridge

SAN PEDRO, Calif. This was the first running event allowed over the bridge in more than a decade.

The five-mile race began and ended at Fifth Street and Harbor Boulevard.

The Vincent Thomas Bridge was shut down for the event, which began just after 8 a.m.

Runners and walkers were relegated to the right lane as police followed alongside in the left lane on motorcycles. Authorities designated the right lane for those participating in the race because several grate coverings were placed on that side so that people can pass over them safely. There are eight expansion grates on the bridge.
