Budget officials want LAPD hiring freeze

September 9, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Top city budget officials want to impose a hiring freeze on the L.A. Police Department so that officers who retire will not be replaced. The city faces a $530 million budget deficit.

Chief William Bratton and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are denouncing the proposal, saying it would reverse the city's falling crime rates. Both have made it their mission to increase the ranks of the department to 10,000.

Hundreds of officers are expected to retire this year.
