Irvine fertility clinic pays out $24m

September 11, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Trying to end a scandal over its fertility clinic, the University of California at Irvine has reportedly paid out more than $24 million in settlements. The payments are the result of dozens of lawsuits over eggs or embryos stolen by doctors more than a decade ago.

The L.A. Times says the settlements came in 137 separate incidents where eggs either disappeared, or were given to other women without consent.

The two doctors were never prosecuted because they fled the country.
