High-speed pursuit on 10 Fwy ends in LA

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES A female suspect was taken into custody. She appeared disoriented and confused as she spoke to police.

Authorities tell ABC7 Eyewitness News that the pursuit began by the /*California Highway Patrol*/ in Indio. The suspect was driving in excessive speeds, swerving through all lanes of the freeway and cutting off other drivers.

"She was using all lanes, 100 miles an hour, cutting people off, almost TC'd a couple of times," Said Sgt. Carl Gafford of the California Highway Patrol.

CHP units kept a safe distance trailing the woman, who was driving a /*Dodge Stratus*/.

After more than two hours of erratic driving, she made her way through east L.A. and into the downtown area, driving right past one of our Eyewitness News vans.

Finally, the suspect brought the car to a stop. Officers moved in with guns drawn and pulled her out of the car.

"I wanna explain, can I please explain?" the woman said as officers handcuffed her.

Authorities searched the car and found a bag of prescription drugs. They say it doesn't appear the woman was under the influence, but she appears to be mentally unstable.

There were some near misses, but no damage or injuries, authorities say.

The woman's name has not been released. She remains in custody and will likely be taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

It's unclear what prompted the situation.
