Pepperdine's flags honor 9/11 victims

MALIBU, Calif. The memorial includes an American flag for each of the lives lost eight years ago.

The flags on the campus beneath the Phillips Theme Tower will be on display for one week, until Sept. 18th.

In addition to a flag for each of the nearly 3,000 victims, the display includes flags from the countries represented among those who died.

The university began the annual memorial Friday morning with a prayer service at the Heroes Garden, an outdoor sanctuary overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

A /*Pepperdine*/ graduate, Tom Burnett was among the /*Sept.11*/ victims. He was a passenger aboard United Airlines /*Flight 93*/ which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Burnett and other passengers aboard the flight have been called heroes for attempting to take control of the hijacked airliner.
