Board bans smoking in L.A. County parks

LOS ANGELES Board members cited secondhand smoke as the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

The ban was recommended by the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Supervisors did allow a number of exceptions.

Smoking will be allowed in designated areas run by independent contractors, such as golf courses and tennis courts.

Another exception is special permits using county parks as settings for photography, movie, and television shoots.

The city of Los Angeles already has a similar prohibition in place.

City News Service contributed to this report.
