Man flees police, falls off cliff

SAN PEDRO, Calif. The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro.

Officers patrolling the area heard what sounded like a gunshot and went to investigate. They say the suspect pointed a gun in their direction and pulled the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned. That's when the suspect ran away.

A canine search crew found the man a couple of hours later injured on the rocks below. The 26-year-old suspect was airlifted to a hospital with cuts and bruises.

Investigators said the man had just finished robbing four people before officers spotted him. The suspect fired his weapon during a holdup, but the victims were not hurt.

Cell phones and cash taken during the robbery were later returned to the victims, police said.

The suspect is expected to survive.
