Gary Labon, 46, was arrested Friday in Hawthorne.
Police caught him brutally beating and raping the 70-year-old victim, while she was collecting cans from trash bins along Jefferson Avenue.
He has been booked for attempted murder and sexual assault.
Detectives say details of the crime are similar to other attacks in the area.
