In an effort to help close that gap, there's talk of laying off some 300 police cadets, imposing a hiring freeze and forcing officers to take furloughs.
LAPD Chief William Bratton and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa have denounced the proposal, saying it would reverse the city's falling crime rates.
