September 25, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Eight Southern California hospitals have been fined for a variety of violations which put patients in jeopardy during and after surgery. Each of the hospitals was fined $25,000 dollars per violation.

The investigation was conducted by the the California Department of Public Health.

The hospitals include Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, Saint John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, USC University Hospital, Kindred Hospital in Ontario, Loma Linda University Medical Center, Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital in Norwalk, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center in San Diego County, and Tri-City Hospital in the San Diego County community of Oceanside.

The violations included incidents like requiring a second surgery to remove a surgical object left behind during the first surgery, failing to follow standard surgical procedures, and failing to track patients' medical records.

The administrative penalties were issued following legislation signed last year by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to protect the health and safety of hospital patients.
