Letterman apologizes to wife and staff

LOS ANGELES For the first time Monday night, David Letterman spoke about the harm his past affairs with staff members have caused to his wife. But first came a string of jokes, aimed at himself.

"It's fall here in New York City, and I spent the whole weekend raking my hate mail," Letterman joked.

Letterman said he did the right thing by reporting the attempt to blackmail him. But he acknowledged that his marriage has suffered.

"My wife, Regina, she has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it. And at that point, there's only two things that can happen. Either you're gonna make some progress and get it fixed, or you're gonna fall short and perhaps not get fixed. So let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me," said Letterman Monday night.

Letterman also apologized to current staff members for putting them in the media spotlight.
