Irvine seeks top billing on 405 Freeway

IRVINE, Calif. The Irvine city council is unanimously backing a plan to add the city's name to more than a dozen signs on the southbound 405 freeway between the 710 in Long Beach and the city of Irvine.

Right now the signs just say "San Diego."

Irvine officials say the change would help travelers and reflect Irvine's status as a major destination and home to significant companies and educational institutions. City officials say the freeway would still be known as the "San Diego Freeway."

The change wouldn't cost the city anything since the signs are due to be replaced. The move still needs county, state and federal approval.
