Teen dies in L.B. football game shooting

LONG BEACH, Calif. Family members said Melody Ross was an honors student and was attending the homecoming game at Wilson High School wearing in a 'Supergirl' Halloween costume when she was shot to death.

An 18-year-old and a 20-year old man were also injured in the shooting, but are expected to survive. The two men were not high school students.

Investigators said Ross was an innocent bystander and had nothing to do with the altercation that led to the shooting.

Witnesses said five to seven shots rang out as a crowd left the stadium following the game against Long Beach Poly and gathered near Ximeno Avenue between East Seventh and 10th streets at around 10 p.m.

All three victims were taken to the hospital where Ross died. A suspect has not been caught.

It is unknown if any of the victims or the shooter was a student at either high school.

Grief counselors will be on hand at Wilson High Monday to help students stunned by Ross' death.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Long Beach Police Department at (562) 570-7244.
