Rape suspect pours acid on victim's face

LOS ANGELES Police said the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Miguel Angel Herrera of Los Angeles, beat, tortured and sexually assaulted his girlfriend on Halloween.

Herrera and his girlfriend were in a heated argument about her being late to his apartment in the 1100 block of West 41st Place at about 9 p.m. Police said Herrera became angry and restrained his girlfriend, punching her, cutting her with a knife and striking her multiple times with an electrical cord.

During the attack, Herrera allegedly poured acid on the victim's face and sexually assaulted her.

"The most brutal of all is he poured acid on her face and her body. He tried to make her drink the acid, as he put it, 'to teach her a lesson,'" said LAPD Capt. Art Miller.

Police said Herrera let the victim drive off, but followed her in his pickup truck. The woman was able to elude Herrera's truck and drove to her family's house. A family member took the victim to a police station.

She was then taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and released. Police say the woman in her mid-20s is "in good spirits."

Herrera, a known gang member, is described as Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen driving a Nissan Titan pickup truck, license plate number 8K55469.

Police are asking for the public's help in apprehending the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD at (213) 485-2585.

"Due to the suspect's behavior and the level of violence in this crime and because he is considered extremely dangerous, we are asking the community to be on alert and to help us find this guy so we can put him in jail," said Miller.

Police say the suspect may have headed to Mexico, where he has family. They say they have alerted Mexican officials to be on the lookout.
