The L.A. County Sheriff's Department will use the money to buy a custom-built bomb response truck and a platform attachment for helicopters that can quickly lift a 10-man team aboard a ship.
They will also upgrade to a sonar system that screens for explosives.
The federal stimulus grant was offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of a program to protect the nation's critical port infrastructure.
