Herbal supplements may cause lead level rise

November 27, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
New research suggests that some herbal supplements may increase lead levels in the blood of women.Researchers looked at women of reproductive age and found that those who had taken such supplements as ayurvedic or St. John's wort had elevated lead levels.

But, they note, the study does not prove the supplements cause the increase.

Lead can be passed through a woman's body to developing fetuses or breast-feeding infants.

The study was published in the "Journal of General Internal Medicine."
