Slain Los Angeles County deputy honored

ARTESIA, Calif. Sheriff Lee Baca, fellow deputies and Powell's family gathered in Artesia to dedicate a portion of the 91 Freeway in Powell's honor.

The dedicated stretch of highway is between the 605 Freeway and Pioneer Boulevard.

The 42-year-old Powell of Torrance was an 18-year-veteran of the department who worked from the Lakewood Station.

Powell was shot and killed seven years ago Monday during a suspected hostage situation.

Baca called Powell a true friend who had a zeal for what he could be.

Powell is survived by his wife and four children.
