LAX to receive $150M for security facelift

LOS ANGELES The Transportation Security Administration and airport officials announced the federal grant to upgrade the baggage security system and speed up lines at airport terminals.

The funds will complete a behind-the-scenes automated system that will eliminate the need for bags to be screened for explosives manually at explosive detection machines inside terminal lobbies.

"Reducing long lines and long waits in the terminals will make passengers both happier and safer," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "These federal funds will finish the in-line baggage processing project and bring baggage security into the 21st century at LAX."

The in-line baggage screening system has already been completed at terminal 3 at LAX, as well as at LA/Ontario International Airport.

The entire $670 million project for the two airports is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
