Suspect shot dead by officer in traffic stop

WEST COVINA, Calif. The shooting happened after a West Covina Police officer pulled over a vehicle for a traffic stop on South Azusa and East Vine avenues at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

The officer ordered one of the passengers out of the car. While the officer patted him down, the suspect allegedly reached for a gun in his waistband.

Authorities said the officer pushed the suspect away and fired, striking the suspect twice in the upper body. He was declared dead at the scene.

Two other suspects fled, but were later arrested. They allegedly dropped handguns when fleeing. Police recovered the weapons.

The officer was not hurt in the shooting.
