December 23, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
The new chief of the Los Angeles Police Department is stepping up police patrols as part of a cost-cutting effort.Charlie Beck plans to move 130 officers off desk duty and put them on the streets.

Beck says that in this current economic climate, it's important for higher-paid officers to better serve the public.

More transfers are expected.

The department is facing a budget deficit of more than $80 million.

Beck was sworn-in earlier this month.

He is the son of a former LAPD deputy chief and the father of two LAPD officers.
