AG to ask for review of body armor ruling

December 30, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
Attorney General Jerry Brown will ask the California Supreme Court to review a ruling that overturned a state ban on felons owning or wearing body armor. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck is urging Brown to appeal the decision, saying body armor gives violent criminals the upper hand.

The legislature imposed the ban after a 1997 gun battle in North Hollywood between police and two bank robbers wearing military-grade body armor.

Earlier this month, the 2nd District Court of Appeals overturned the ban, saying it was unconstitutionally vague.

Brown's appeal is expected to be filed in late January.
