Two South Gate police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after rushing into a burning home to save a man.The fire broke out around about 12:15 a.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Nebraska Avenue.

The officers were the first to arrive on scene. People outside the home told the officers that someone was trapped inside. The two rushed into the house, but were forced back out by the intense heat.

The elderly man believed to be inside the home was later found outside. He had actually been able to escape on his own before the officers arrived to the scene.
