A manhunt is under way for a man who beat an elderly woman in her San Jacinto home on New Year's Day.Around 6:30 a.m. Jan. 1, a horrifying 911 call came in from a home on Beringer Drive in San Jacinto.

The call was made by an 87-year-old woman, as her attacker broke in through a side window.

Within minutes of the frantic call, deputies arrived, but the suspect was already gone.

In didn't take long for neighbors like Yvonne Leroux to find out what had happened.

"We're all just dumbfounded, and it's very frightening to the neighborhood," Leroux said.

Leroux said the victim is an active woman, often seen walking the neighborhood.

"Very nice lady, very friendly, very nice. I was dumbfounded. I was sick when this happened. I can't believe anyone would do this to an older lady," Leroux described.

From evidence collected at the scene, detectives narrowed in on 22-year-old Victor James Hernandez as their suspect.

Sheriff's deputies believe the motive was armed robbery.

"He's known to law enforcement, and we want to make sure he's known to the public. So if you see him, call 911, because anyone who's capable of beating an 87-year-old woman should be in jail," said Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

In the meantime, on Beringer Drive, neighbors couldn't agree more.

"I just hope they catch him, if that's the guy, and put him away for a long, long time," said Chuck Mason, the victim's neighbor.

If you know the whereabouts of the suspect or any other information concerning the case, you're asked to call the Riverside Sheriff's Department.

The elderly victim is still in the hospital, but her condition is unknown.
