Malibu residents fumed by inmate housing plan

January 20, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
A plan to house prison inmate firefighters in Malibu has been scrapped. The Station Fire burned through a firefighting camp on Mt. Gleeson, in the Angeles National Forest in September, displacing 80 inmate firefighters.

The L.A. County Fire Department was considering using a Malibu fire station as their temporary base.

Despite the advantage of having firefighters in their own fire prone neighborhood, local residents were opposed to the idea. They said they didn't like the idea of having inmates as their neighbors.

Fire officials now say they will be looking for another location for the displaced inmate firefighters.
