State Fish and Game officials are considering a plan to increase the number of bears hunters can kill. The new plan would allow hunters to legally kill 2,500 bears, an increase of nearly 50 percent. The state's black bear population is at a record level.

Foothill residents have been frightened and surprised by a number of black bear visits to their yards. The proposed increase in hunting is not expected to curtail those visits, since hunters don't usually apply for permits to kill bears in the San Gabriel Mountains.
