Study: Some diabetes treatments cause harm

LOS ANGELES

Diabetics are at a high risk of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke.

A lengthy federal study released Sunday shows that treatments designed to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and sugar levels in diabetics are not particularly helpful and in some cases can increase the risk of side effects.

Researchers found that among people with type two diabetes, lowering blood sugar levels excessively actually increases the risk of heart disease.

However, the study did find that treatments did reduce the number of strokes but the drop was offset by risky side effects.
