Junior lifeguard's parents file lawsuit

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. Allyssa Squirrell, 11, was taking part in an ocean drill last summer when she was hit by a lifeguard boat.

Her parents, Rick and Pam Squirrell, have filed a wrongful death suit against the city of Huntington Beach. They allege that city employees were negligent and caused their daughter's death. The suit claims the employees did not operate the boat safely or slow down near swimmers, or have enough flotation devices on board.

Prosecutors have decided not to file criminal charges against the veteran marine safety officer who was at the helm when the boat hit the girl.

There was no comment by the Huntington Beach City Attorney.
