DNA evidence unfolds 30-year-old cold case

March 25, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office used DNA evidence to file a murder charge in a cold case that was 30 years old. Leonard Dominguez, 53, was arrested in connection with the April 1979 strangulation of Sandra Phillips. Phillips, who was 33 years old at the time, was found dead in her West Los Angeles home.

Dominguez was arrested at his home in Los Angeles and is being held without bail. Dominguez faces a murder charge, plus two special circumstance allegations, murder during the commission of a rape, and burglary.

Investigators say there was an extensive investigation. However no viable suspect was ever identified. Using modern research techniques, investigators say they found a genetic match with Dominguez after an unrelated narcotics arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD Cold Case Special Section at (213) 846-6910.
